Queenstown to Wanaka via the Crown Range

Updated: Dec 1, 2021

The Crown Range lies to the east of the Wakatipu Basin between Queenstown and Wanaka.

It winds steeply between the Arrow Junction south of Arrowtown to the Crown Saddle at 1076m (3530 ft), it then winds down past the Cardrona Township and Cardrona Alpine Resort towards Wanaka located to the North.

The Crown Range is the highest sealed mountain pass in New Zealand and can often get snow in the winter months. Motorists are required to carry snow chains and four wheel drive vehicles, like Roam Wanaka’s luxury Volkswagen can be a safer option in slippery conditions.

The Crown Range is the fastest and most direct route between Wanaka and Queenstown and offers some spectacular views back towards Queenstown, Lake Hayes and Arrowtown. On the Wanaka side the road follows the Cardrona River through the tussock filled valley.

Book your private shuttle from Queenstown Airport to Wanaka or Wanaka to Queenstown Airport with Roam Wanaka. We offer a private Taxi / Transfer service at affordable rates, including a door to door service, meet and greet upon arrival, children’s car seats and luggage trailer if required.
